Why FOLKMOOT Works This Way

Every design decision in FOLKMOOT exists because a real democratic movement failed in a specific, documentable way. This is not theoretical. These are lessons paid for in blood, imprisonment, and the collapse of horizontal organizations.

Web of Trust: Identity Without the State

Government-issued ID is a tool of the state. Requiring it for democratic participation means the state controls who participates. FOLKMOOT uses community vouching instead: real people recognize real people.

Zapatista Communities (1994-present)Membership verified by community recognition, not state papers. Survived 30+ years of state opposition.
Rojava Social Contract (2012-present)Community assemblies verify participants through social bonds, not documents.

The Web of Trust requires 3 vouches from at least 2 distinct social clusters. This makes Sybil attacks expensive: you need real relationships in multiple communities, not just one compromised group creating fake accounts.

Deliberation Windows: Democracy Requires Time

Flash-mob voting is how platforms get captured. A coordinated group shares a link, floods a vote in hours, and the result reflects mobilization speed, not community will. FOLKMOOT enforces a minimum 7-day deliberation window before any vote opens.

Pol.is / vTaiwan (2015-present)Structured deliberation before voting produced consensus on divisive issues. Taiwan used it for national policy.
Paris Commune (1871)Rapid decision-making under siege led to strategic errors. Speed is not democracy.

Adversarial Review: Mandatory Devil's Advocate

Every proposal is assigned adversarial reviewers before it goes to vote. These reviewers are randomly selected from trusted community members and are required to submit critical analysis. Voting cannot begin until reviews are complete.

Athenian Sortition (508-322 BCE)Random selection for civic duty prevented elite capture of deliberative bodies for 200 years.

This is not optional. It is structurally enforced. You cannot skip adversarial review any more than you can skip the cryptographic proof that your ballot is valid.

Warrant Canary: Silence as Signal

FOLKMOOT publishes a cryptographically signed statement every 30 days confirming that no secret government orders have been received. If the canary expires without being renewed, that absence is the warning.

Press Freedom CanariesStandard tool for organizations that cannot legally disclose government demands. The absence of a denial is itself a disclosure.

The canary uses the same Ed25519 key as the election bulletin board. If the key is seized, both the canary and the election system break simultaneously — making the compromise visible rather than silent.

FALKEN Integration: Detecting Manufactured Consensus

FALKEN is WOPR Systems' disinformation detection pipeline. It monitors for coordinated inauthentic behavior, narrative injection, and astroturf signals. When a high-confidence signal is detected during an active election's deliberation window, the window is automatically extended.

This does not suppress speech. It buys time. The extension gives the community time to evaluate the signal and respond organically rather than being overwhelmed by a coordinated campaign.

Fork Rights: The Ultimate Check on Power

If this instance of FOLKMOOT is captured — by its operators, by a government, by a wealthy donor — the protocol specification is public domain (CC0). Anyone can fork it. The data format is documented. The cryptographic primitives are standard. You do not need our permission to leave.

ActivityPub / Mastodon FediverseWhen Twitter was captured, the fediverse provided an exit because the protocol was open. FOLKMOOT follows the same principle.
Spanish CNT-FAI (1936-1939)Horizontal organization without exit rights led to internal capture by political factions. Fork rights are structural insurance.

FOLKMOOT is built by WOPR Systems LLC. It is not a WOPR Foundation program.
